Political System
Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. A written constitution provides for the organs of state, namely the executive,the legislature and the judiciary. The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (King) is the Head of State and is elected for a 5 year term amongst the Council of Rulers with a membership of 9 sultans who are hereditary rulers of 9 states in West Malaysia whereas the other four states, Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak are headed by governors appointed by the Malaysian government. It has a bicameral Parliament comprising of an appointed upper house (the Senate) and an elected lower house (the Parliament). The Prime Minister leads the Cabinet in the administration of the Government. The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong appoints the Prime Minister and the other Cabinet members from among the Members of Parliament(MPs).
