Legal System
While the Malaysian legal system has its roots in the English common law, it has over the years developed its own set of legal principles taking into account local laws in addition to the English common law.

The judicial system is essentially four-tiered. At the apex is the Federal Court which is the final court of appeal. Below that is the Court of Appeal and directly below the Court of Appeal is the High Court.

The Subordinate Courts which comprises essentially the Sessions Courts and the Magistrates Courts form the first tier in the judicial hierarchy. The Magistrates Courts has jurisdiction over civil claims not exceeding RM25,000 while the Sessions Courts generally has jurisdiction over civil claims up to RM250,000.
